Power in practice.

RENEWABLE ENERGY / COURSE PROJECT

MPPT with a synchronous buck converter

Designed, simulated, and implemented a converter to extract maximum power from a PV panel for battery charging.

Implementation details

Incremental Conductance MPPT with digital implementation on TI LAUNCHXL-F28069M. Designed the PCB in Altium Designer, hand-wound the inductor, and tuned the PI controller using the Bode plot approach.

Renewable Energy Systems course, supervised by Dr. Naga Brahmendra Gorla at IIT Palakkad.

POWER QUALITY / B.TECH. FINAL PROJECT

Single-phase D-STATCOM

Designed and implemented a distribution STATCOM to compensate reactive and harmonic currents.

Implementation details

Simulated the system in MATLAB/Simulink and implemented the control algorithm on STM32F407VET6. Developed PCBs in Proteus, including isolated power supplies for gate drivers.

The hardware achieved separation of harmonic and reactive load-current components and successful compensation.

CRI Pumps

Final-year M.Tech. project

Working on a power blending system for industrial pumps. A grid-connected PFC H-Bridge and a PV boost converter with MPPT feed a common DC bus, which drives a motor through a voltage source inverter.

The control strategy prioritizes solar power, with the grid supplying any deficit. Work spans system and controller design, PCB development, algorithms, digital implementation, hardware development, and testing.

Tools and supervision

MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS for simulation; Altium Designer for PCB design; Renesas R5F524TAAxFF for digital control. Includes comparative loss calculations for different PFC topologies.

Internal guide: Dr. Naga Brahmendra Gorla, IIT Palakkad. External guide: Mr. Shivashankar Gunaki, CRI Pumps.
